The "K-shaped" economy will affect your 2026 tax refund. Here's how.
![]()
The "K-shaped" economy is hitting U.S. consumers in unexpected ways, including their tax refunds.
Higher-income Americans are set to reap bigger benefits in their tax refunds than other households, thanks to changes in the "big, beautiful bill" act," according to a recent analysis from investment firm Principal Asset Management. The Republican-backed measure, signed into law by President Trump in July of 2025, extended 2017 tax cuts and introduced a host of new tax breaks.
Experts have taken to describe the U.S. economy as K-shaped to reflect the trend in which wealthier Americans have pulled further ahead of lower-income workers amid a surging stock market and rising home prices.
That pattern is also likely to be visible in this year's tax refunds, which are expected to rise overall while delivering the biggest gains to...More

Mikaela Shiffrin's seventh straight missed Olympic medal was a stunner. Now the pressure is really on in Italy
Rarely does an all-time great in an individual sport fail to meet the moment so many times in a row like this. Thankfully, it's not her last shot

One of the most interesting and compelling competitions at the 2026 Winter Olympics is the team combined alpine skiing contest, a new discipline for the Milan Cortina Games. It's a great upgrade. The duo-oriented event features one skier barreling through the downhill and the other zig-zagging in the slalom. The lowest combined time after both races gets the gold. This team concept with these two races has never been in the Olympics before and figures to be one of the must-see attractions in future Games.
With that as the backdrop, the setup was ideal in Italy for the United States and, in particular, for Breezy Johnson and American skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin. Johnson, who already won gold...More

The Minions made it to the 2026 Winter Olympics after a music rights dispute almost forced Spanish figure skater Tomas-Llorenc Guarino Sabate to change his plans.
Sabate donned his yellow-and-blue costume and brought the mischievous spirit of the Minions to Milan in the men's short program Tuesday.
"It felt amazing" despite nerves and an early mistake, Sabate said after his performance to a soundtrack that starts with peals of laughter from the lovable children's characters, who were introduced as the henchmen of criminal mastermind Gru in "Despicable Me."
Although the 26-year-old placed 25th out of 29 skaters, falling one spot short of qualifying for Friday's free...More

At least nine people were killed and dozens more injured in shootings at a high school and residence in the northeast part of the province of British Columbia, Canadian police said Tuesday. The suspected shooter is dead, officials said.
The school shooting was first reported at 1:20 p.m. Pacific Time at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a news release.
Authorities responded to find six people dead inside the school, the RCMP said, and a seventh person died while being transported to a hospital.
Police also responded to a second crime scene at a residence that is believed to have been linked to the school shooting, where two more people were...More

U.S. figure skater Maxim Naumov carried the memory of his late parents with him to the Olympics on Tuesday night, delivering an emotional, heartfelt short program at the Milan Cortina Games that fulfilled a dream they had long shared together.
His parents, former pairs world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were among the 67 people killed — more than two dozen of them members of the figure skating community — when American Airlines Flight 5342 crashed into a military helicopter on approach to Ronald Reagan National Airport and fell into the icy Potomac River on Jan. 29, 2025.
One of the last conversations Naumov had with his parents was about what it would take...More

Norwegian biathlete breaks down during TV interview, begs ex-girlfriend to take him back after cheating
Norway's Sturla Holm Laegreid gave the most bizarre interview of the 2026 Winter Olympics

Olympians are often overcome with emotion after winning a medal at the Games, but it's typically tears of joy, not sadness, that accompany the highlight of their athletic lives.
However, after winning bronze in the men's 20km biathlon, Norwegian skiier Sturla Holm Lægreid broke down for a much different reason. In an interview with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, he confessed to cheating on his now ex-girlfriend and pleaded with her to take him back.
"I told her a week ago. And it's been the worst week of my life," Lægreid said, via NBC. "I had a gold medal in life, and there's probably a lot of people out there who look at me differently now, but I only have eyes for her. Sports has taken a bit of a back seat these past couple...More

Two-time national curling champion Rich Ruohonen said he's proud to represent the United States at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, even though "it's been tough" in his home state of Minnesota.
"I'm a lawyer there. I've been for 28 years, and a lot of tragedy, a lot of difficulties. And, you know, we want to focus on the Games, but at the same time, what's going on there is wrong," Ruohonen told CBS News when asked how it is being at the Olympics and thinking about the news that has been coming out of his home state. In recent weeks, federal immigration agents have killed two people in high-profile shootings in Minneapolis in the course of their operations there.
